Top 8 Best regiment in Indian army / indian special forces 2018 :- The Indian Army is the world’s largest volunteer organisation, and has a regimental system inherited from the Britishers (They based the Indian regiments on the theory of the Martial Races, especially and more so after 1857), and has 7 commands. The oldest regiment of the Indian Army is the Sarvada Shaktishali – Grenadiers and the Veera Madrasi- Madras Regiment, which were raised in the year 1758, with the newest among Indian Regiments being the Sikkim Scouts, which was raised in 2013.

After independence in 1947, four of the ten Gurkha Regiments were transferred to the Royal British Army, with the rest of the British Indian Army divided into India and Pakistan. Para commando The Parachute Regiment presently has seven Special Forces, six Airborne, two Territorial Army and one Counter-Insurgency (Rashtriya Rifles) battalions in its fold. The regiment has tried raising new battalions to augment the strength of the special forces however the task has not been completed due to the tough selection phase. In the mid-1980s, there were plans to take the three para commando battalions from the Parachute Regiment and bring them together under an individual specialized organisation, the Special Forces Regiment. After several logistic and administrative obstacles, these plans were abandoned, and they continue to be trained and recruited by the Parachute Regiment. Para (SF) operate in assault teams, which work individually behind enemy lines, whereas the Paratroopers (Airborne) work in large teams and coordinate with other units as their role involves occupying large areas behind enemy lines. The total strength of the regiment stands at about to 4,500 with the majority being in the Paratroopers (Airborne), while the Para (SF) includes about 1,200 operatives. They have to hide their identity from general public.

The Gorkha regiment was formerly a part of British Indian Army, but ever since Independence it became an indispensable part of the Indian Army. The Gorkha Regiment is know for its courage in the battlefield which is discernible by the gallantary awards won by the Gorkha soldiers and the battle honour awards awarded to the Gorkha battalions. There are 7 Gorkha Regiments in the Indian Army out of which six were tranferred from the British Indian Army and one was raised post-independence. The 7 Gorkha Regiments of the Indian Army are- 1 Gorkha Rifles, 3 Gorkha Rifles, 4 Gorkha Rifles, 5 Gorkha Rifles, 8 Gorkha Rifles, 9 Gorkha Rifles and 11 Gorkha Rifles. 11 Gorkha Rifles was raised post-independence. Out these 7 Gorkha Regiments, 11 Gorkha Rifles have been part of almost all the operations undertaken by the Indian army after independence.

The Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army have a long history of valiance and sacrifice. The Grenadiers have been serving the country much before indpendence during world war-I and world war-II. Rajputana Rifles is the senior most rifle regiment of the Indian Army. Originally raised in 1775, the Rajputana Rifles was re-organised in 1921-22. Earlier it was a part of British Indian Army has been serving the Indian Army post-independence. The Rajputana Rifles comprises of various battalions with glorious pasts. It also holds the honour of being the first one to win Victoria Cross of the Indian Army in 1856. The Jat regiment is one of the longest serving infantry regiments of the Indian Army. Jats, who are primarily known for their skill with weapons and in combat, have won 19 battle honours between 1839 to 1947. Jat regiment has participted in various operations undertaken by the Indian Army during its 200 years of existence and have won various battle honours pre and post independence. Jat regiment is also known as one of the most decorative regiment of the Indian Army and have won 5 battle honours, two Victoria Crosses, Two Ashok Chakras and numerous other medals and honours post independence.

Sikh Regiment is known as one of the bravest regiments of Indian Army. The 19 battalions strong, Sikh regiment is one of the highest decorated regiments of the Indian Army. Tracing its roots from the British Indian Army, the Sikh regiment was once one of the highest decorated regiments of the British Empire. During Operation Vijay 1999, the Indo-Pak Kargil War, the Sikh regiment displayed sterling performance marked with exceptional valour . The regiment holds the privilege of receiving 1652 gallantry awards and honours by the members of the regiment, which include 2 Param Vir Chakras, 14 Maha Vir Chakras 68 Ashok Chakras and many more.

Madras Regiment is 20 battalions strong. After independence, the infantry battalions of the Travancore “Nair Pattalam”, Cochin and Mysore State forces were amalgamated into the Madras Regiment. Post-independence saw the consolidation of the Regiment and re-affirmation of the versatility and valour of the South Indian troops when the battalions of the Regiment fought fierce battles during the 1947–48 Jammu & Kashmir Operations, the 1962 Sino-Indian Conflict and the Indo-Pak Wars of 1965 and 1971. The deployment of as many as seven battalions of the Regiment.

The class composition of the regiment is primarily formed by hardy, frugal and disciplined people from the former Maratha Empire. The men are drawn from the state of Maharashtra, with some percentage from Marathi speaking areas of Karnataka including Coorg. Their regimental centre has been Belgaum, Karnataka, since 1922, which was part of the undivided Bombay state at that time.

The battle cry of Maratha Light Infantry is, Bol Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki Jai! (“Cry Victory to Emperor Shivaji!”) in tribute to the Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle. Indian independence saw the Regiment reverting to the original five battalions, with the 3rd Maratha Light Infantry converting to the airborne role and becoming 2nd Bn, the Parachute Regiment in April 1952. With the integration of the erstwhile princely states, the 19th, 20th, 22nd battalions were amalgamated, from the state forces of Satara, Kolhapur, Baroda, and Hyderabad, with the Regiment. The expansion of the Indian Army to meet the omnipresent threat to its borders has seen the Regiment grow to its present total of 18 battalions and two TA battalions whilst the period also saw the conversion of 21st Bn into 21 Para (Special Forces) and the 115 Infantry battalion (TA) being grouped under the Mahar Regiment. Since Independence, battalions of the Maratha LI have taken part in every armed conflict – Jammu and Kashmir operations in 1947-1948, entry into Junagarh, Hyderabad Campaign (1948), Invasion of Goa, Daman and Diu, the Sino-Indian War, conflicts with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971 against the Chinese on the Sikkim watershed in 1956, the operations[citation needed] in Sri Lanka, the ongoing operations in the Siachen glacier and in counter insurgency operations
